Knowledge Transfer Projects
I am a strong advocate of all forms of Knowledge Transfer (KT). This used to be called Technology Transfer, and is now often referred to as Knowledge Exchange. Actually I prefer the term Knowledge Exchange, since it more accurately reflects the reality which is a two-way exchange of ideas in a dynamic partnership between university and company, leading to real innovation.
KT can take many forms, across a spectrum from informal arrangements such as industrially linked final-year student projects, or Masters projects through to 100% industry funded contract R&D (typically large projects) or academic consultancy. In my experience one of the most successful and effective forms of engagement is the DTI Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme, formerly known as Teaching Company Scheme (TCS).
